Weather

Winds in the winter time at the canyon are sporatic.  If the wx looks bad we will cancel.  This should give everyone ample time to cancel hotels, cars, travel, etc.  There will be a 5 day prior weather call on Sunday 19 JAN 24 1800 LCL.  If weather is not forecast to be favorable the event will be cancelled. You will be notified via email.

Fuel Planning

The canyon is 100 NMi away from KMHV (longer if R2425 transit is unavailable).  That’s 200 Nmi round trip not counting runs.  Consider the length of the trip for fuel planning.  KIYK is an available fuel stop if you need it.

Instructors

Instructors with military experience in the local area and in low level will be on hand.  They participate on their own time as volunteers on an as available basis.

Logistics

Mojave is a Mecca of aviation – but not much else.  Hotels and ground transportation are a challenge.  Please read details below.

Hotels

Mojave

There is only one hotel in Mojave that is clean and comfortable – The Comfort Inn (https://www.choicehotels.com/california/mojave/comfort-inn-hotels/ca797).  It is on the edge of the airport.  It’s (long) walkable but not with luggage.  DO NOT STAY ANY WHERE ELSE IN MOJAVE!!!

Lancaster/Palmdale/Tehachapi

All of the hotel chains have properties in Lancaster, Palmdale and Tehachapi and offer government/AAA/etc rates.  The two closest outside of Mojave are:

Homewood Suites
2320 W Double Play Way
Lancaster, CA 93536
Phone: (661) 723-8040

Hampton Inn & Suites
2300 Double Play Way
Lancaster, CA 93536
661-940-9194

 Ground Transport

Text Box: CAUTION RIDE SHARES, TAXI, UBER & LIFT are sparse in Mojave.  They exist but are not reliably available.  Count on at your own risk.

RENTAL CARS

Mojave is notoriously poor for rental car support.  Enterprise and Hertz in Lancaster will drop off and pick up at the KMHV Admin desk or FBO but it must be pre-arranged WITH THE LOCAL OFFICE (even if the general reservations folks say otherwise – they’re wrong) and they tend to charge extra days if they pick up when they are supposed to.  If several folks want to get together and self coordinate (sorry, I’m task saturated), getting a van is a good option.
